Photography

I use digital photography in every project I undertake. Often for simple documentation, such as this still of me welding the frame a sculpture.

Photos help me explore points of view and details I might normally overlook. The super-macro setting on my camera allows for extreme close-ups, transforming the mundane into the exotic.

I rely on photos heavily during the development of any artwork or project. Digital cameras make it easy to capture a moment in time or a point of view without waiting for costly proof sheets.

Different textures and lighting values are especially important when creating 3D models, but are also significant features in paintings and drawings.

Sometimes the photograph is the artwork.

Cameras are not the only source of digital imagery. In this case I used my scanner and moved the card decks while it scanned them to create a ripple effect. Look on the web for artists that make only scanner art!

In the 21 years since I first learned the basics of photography the medium has evolved considerably. However, the medium's ability to describe in detail the world around us remains a constant.
